KEYSTONE CHAPTER OF UNICO NATIONAL
WHO WE ARE!!!
Keystone Chapter UNICO is chartered in Dunmore, PA and is a member of UNICO National, the Largest Italian American Service Organization in the United States. The word UNICO is taken from the Italian language and means “unique”. As an acronym, it means Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity and Opportunity. UNICO National‘s membership is exclusively U.S. Citizens of Italian heritage, or who are married to those of Italian heritage. The members are known to be of good character and reputation, united together in a national chain, working together on national projects and separately on community activities, to uplift the prestige of the Italian American community and the betterment of the community at large. UNICO is both non-political and non-sectarian.
UNICO was first organized in Waterbury, CT in 1922 when a group of individuals headed by Dr. Anthony P. Vastola organized the first chapter and began providing services to the community. Since then, UNICO has made its mark by offering scholarships; promoting Italian Study Chairs and the Italian Language; and observing Columbus Day with fitting programs. We also support the work done for handicapped and underprivileged children; charities; community and civic activities; mental health programs; and cancer and Cooley’s Anemia research.
The Keystone Chapter was organized by a UNICO Expansion Committee led by Peter E. Noto and Mark E. McDade and complimented by Mary DePalma, James and Mary Mack, Michele McDade, John R. Mecca, Ted and Val Riggi and Marilyn Vitali, who believed that there was a growth opportunity for UNICO National and the PA II District in Northeast PA. The Carbondale Chapter honored us by being our sponsoring Chapter. In a month’s time there were thirty individuals signed up and by Charter Night, on April 14, 2012, there were one hundred-thirty-six members for induction. It was the largest Chartering anyone could remember and it made the Keystone Chapter the third largest chapter that night. Within months, Keystone became the second largest chapter in UNICO National.
The Keystone Chapter is committed to following and furthering the ideals of UNICO National by welcoming new members into its fellowship of “Fratelli e Sorelle” who are united in making our community even better.
